Makeup and beauty products have a way of overtaking bathroom storage. If your makeup drawers are out of control or your bathroom lacks storage space, here are some organization ideas that will help bring order to your beauty supplies.

Hang Your Makeup

For bathrooms short on storage space, consider putting makeup in a hanging shoe organizer. Danielle Della Pella, owner of Home Story, categorizes makeup and stows it into labeled shoe pockets. A shoe organizer with see-through pockets allows you to find items quickly while taking up zero counter and cabinet space.

Upcycle Ice Cube Trays

Single-color eyeshadows are easy to lose in overcrowded drawers or bins. Danielle Della Pella of Home Story keeps track of eyeshadow singles by stowing them in ice cube trays. This DIY solution is easy and very budget-friendly.

Charming Jars

Mason jars are ideal for organizing wand-shaped beauty items such as makeup brushes, lip pencils and mascara. Danielle Della Pella of Home Story recommends Mason jars as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic storage containers. Fill the bottom of the jar with glass beads to keep brushes upright.

Put Makeup on Display

If you have beauty products worthy of display, place them on a pretty cake stand. Karen Monterichard, owner of Makeup & Beauty Blog, arranges perfume bottles on a two-tier cake stand, placing shorter bottles on the bottom and taller bottles on top. Cake stands are also convenient for displaying nail polish, lotions or any products with attractive packaging.

Acrylic All the Way

Store beauty products in acrylic bins for easy visibility, especially for items that are prone to over-stocking. “We want to have a bird’s eye view of our makeup, or at least be able to see what we have so nothing gets lost in the shuffle,” says Laura Kinsella, owner of Urban Organyze. Acrylic is also easy to clean in the event of spillage.

Out of Sight

If you prefer to keep all clutter out of sight, consider storing beauty items in magazine files. Michelle Hansen, founder of Practical Perfection, stores hair and shower products in these labeled Ikea magazine files. The file boxes organize and hide the clutter to maintain an orderly appearance.

File It Away

A small file cabinet is a great storage solution for makeup junkies who prefer to keep their makeup out of sight. Kerrin Jackson, a makeup artist and owner of the blog Utter Musings, stores her palettes, tubes and other products in a file cabinet with varying drawer heights and drawer inserts. At 13 inches high, this file cabinet is also a good solution for bathrooms that lack built-in storage space.

Beauty Command Center

Modular systems allow you to keep all of your makeup and beauty products in one place without hogging all the bathroom drawers. Pick the size and type of storage components that best suit your needs, then stack them up. Shannon Krause, professional organizer and co-founder of Tidy Nest, labels each compartment with vinyl labels. “Everything should be contained, never floating around a drawer,” says Shannon.

Upright Storage

Finding a specific eyeliner in a heap of makeup pencils can be frustrating, even if the pencils have been organized into a designated tray. Mary Cornetta, owner of Sort and Sweet, stores makeup pencils and mascara in acrylic pencil holders. The vertical storage makes it easier to quickly find the item you need without having to rummage through a pile.

Coordinate Containers

Divvy Up Those Drawers

Track Those Travel-Sized Bottles

Travel-sized beauty items tend to get lost in the back of drawers and cabinets, which can lead to accidental over-stocking. Amy Bloomer, founder and owner of Let Your Space BLOOM, keeps track of travel-sized essentials by stowing them in a bin with small compartments. This way you can quickly assess when it’s time to replenish those mini shampoos and lotions.

Amy Bloomer of Let Your Space BLOOM organizes shampoos, hair products and other bottled beauty products on a rotating storage caddy. A turntable caddy corrals the clutter but still offers access to products that might otherwise be hard to reach in the recesses of your cabinet.
