Terry Crews Helps to Transform a Backyard Into an Athletic Oasis

Terry and the Property Brothers Exercise Smart Landscape Design

On a mission to build an outdoor sanctuary so his driver, Frank, can continue to achieve his weight-loss and health goals, actor-athlete Terry Crews put his blockbuster-sized heart on the line in this episode of Celebrity IOU. Terry’s family immediately bonded with Frank. “This is the kind of guy that I want in my circle forever,” said Terry. “He’s like an older brother to me and like another father figure to my kids. This man is on a fitness journey having already lost 200 pounds, and he’s not done. We need to give him an area where he can get fit and feel better.” With Terry's help, Property Brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott designed a one-of-a-kind outdoor oasis for Frank and his family.

Before: The Backyard

Frank’s backyard is unusually spacious for his California suburb. Before the reno, the family enjoyed using the space for grilling, relaxing and spending time with their dogs — but it wasn't quite ready for hosting and entertaining. Furthermore, the hot tub and pool needed to be repaired, and the environment itself was ready for an overhaul to suit the family’s active lifestyle.

After: The Pool

Rather than tear out the old concrete around the pool, Drew and Jonathan created rectangular slabs with the existing material. Then, for a sleek look, they filled the gaps with artificial turf. Additional concrete slabs accommodate added seating and athletic equipment, which the bros installed under covered pergolas.

After: The Pool

A poolside oasis isn't complete without luxe seating for lounging and sunbathing. Situated beneath scalloped canopy umbrellas, a row of chaise lounge chairs with matching side tables faces the pool. The white cushion fabric is stain resistant and made to take on the heat of the California sunshine. Around the perimeter of the backyard, new landscaping increases privacy.

After: The Gym

Frank's favorite part: Terry and the bros installed gym equipment poolside. Four pergolas placed over distinct workout zones offer Frank a shaded, comfortable area to exercise. Now, he has no excuse to hit the gym! The team patched up cracks in the pool deck, then stained it to match the older slabs of concrete throughout the yard.

Before: The Fitness Shed

Frank used a shed on the property to store his small collection of fitness equipment. The structure was in great condition, so Drew and Jonathan decided to use it in the new design.

After: The Fitness Shed

The bros raised and rotated the existing shed 90 degrees so the doorway opened to the new gym equipment. A refreshed exterior boasts chic white paint and gray trim. Inside, the team maximized storage, creating an area for Frank to lift weights. As Terry pointed out, rainy days are no longer an excuse for Frank to sacrifice his "me time" in the gym.

Before: The Backyard

Jonathan and Drew sought to retain the features Frank appreciated most in his backyard. The family loved the pool and the hot tub, but both had seen better days. Cracks in the concrete and deteriorating coping around both meant further wear and damage was imminent. Terry also shared that Frank loved grilling and spending time in his backyard after a long day.

After: The Backyard

This once-dreary backyard now feels like a luxury estate. The refinished pool deck is waterproof and slip-proof, offering safety and longevity. The bros laid new sod around the yard to replace damaged grass. Adjacent to the hot tub and pool, the team also installed a full outdoor kitchen and dining area.

After: The Outdoor Kitchen and Dining Area

An expansive outdoor kitchen and dining space off the back of Frank’s house promises to take his grilling and entertaining game to the next level. A louvered pergola allows the family to control the sunlight over the dining table on bright days. A full kitchen with weather-resistant plaster cabinets and a stone waterfall counter stands up to rain, while the overhanging breakfast bar offers additional seating for guests.

After: The Outdoor Kitchen and Dining Area

During the reno, Terry made sure a state-of-the-art kitchen would replace Frank's old charcoal grill. The weather-resistant cabinetry and countertops boast a 42-inch barbecue grill with gas side burners and refrigerators. Counter-height seating makes it easy for Frank to socialize with family and guests while he cooks.

Before: The Side Yard and Koi Pond

Frank and his family had invested in several much-loved features in their backyard, including a koi pond and covered seating area; however, it was challenging to maintain. Terry knew Frank enjoyed sitting by the pond, so the bros set out to transform the side yard.

After: The Side Yard

Now, Frank can relax by the revived concrete pool in the side yard. Plush outdoor chairs and a long sofa surround a modern fire pit, offering the family a serious upgrade from their previous paver fire pit. The entertaining area is perfect for poolside drinks, late-night s’mores or a quiet evening at home listening to the waterfall in the koi pond.

The design team transformed this area of the yard into a true oasis. Waterfall features in the koi pond and enhanced landscaping offer serenity. The team laid new gravel across to prevent weed growth and installed a privacy fence next to the shed.

The designers upgraded the existing pergola with a louvered roof and new, comfortable seating. Committed to giving Frank a quiet place to relax, Terry was thrilled to take this tranquil sitting area to the next level.
